Understanding Bacterial Vaginosis Symptom

by Quinn on November 20, 2010

When there are problems with female health, women often ignore bacterial vaginosis symptoms or pass them off as simply poor vaginal hygiene. The problem is that many bacterial vaginosis symptoms are also similar to that of STDs, such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, so it is important for ladies to see their family planning doctor regularly to check up on any symptoms which could give clues to this infection.

There is still a great taboo around female health, and women often feel ashamed to talk about their experiences and problems for fear of being looked down on by others. The truth is up to 30% of all women in the US will experience the condition, some seeing bacterial vaginosis symptoms, and others with no symptoms of the condition whatsoever.

The main sign that a woman is experiencing bacterial vaginosis symptoms is an unusual amount of discharge from the vagina. This is sometimes, but not always accompanied by a strong odor which is not like the natural state of the vagina. The best way to diagnose bacterial vaginosis symptoms is to get it checked out by a doctor.

Most doctors have extensive knowledge on the subject and have seen the condition many times from other women suffering from the condition, but it is understandable that a woman may feel shy or embarrassed about their appointment. This is why it is important to know about bacterial vaginosis symptoms, so that self-diagnosis is a possibility.

It is also important for women to keep tabs on their own sexual health and female hygiene. Keeping a diary is one way to note any unusual changes in the body and know how these changes coincide with the monthly cycle of the body.

Many of the symptoms may just be changes in the body during these hormonal changes, but they could also be something much more serious and rare. It is for this reason that it is suggested to seek medical advice to clarify any self-diagnoses as well as getting the correct medication to solve the problem before it gets too serious and requires surgery or strong medication.

Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms

by aeromovement on April 26, 2011

Vaginas!Bacterial vaginosis is the most widespread vaginal infection. It definitely helps to know and watch out for bacterial vaginosis symptoms. Here are two of the most common.

1. Vaginal Discharge

A thin grayish or white discharge is usually indicative of bacterial vaginosis. It may come as a small trickle or heavy discharge that wets the underwear.

2. Fishy Vaginal Smell

Vaginal discharge usually possesses a fishy smell. This in most cases is almost unnoticeable. However, there are occasions when the odor is particularly strong. This can indicate BV.

Burning sensation and itchiness: Are they bacterial vaginosis symptoms?

There may be many sites on that mention discomfort and itchiness as bacterial vaginosis symptoms. These are however untrue.

More vaginal discharge without itching or burning sensation is actually more of a diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis. When discomfort or itching is present, your physician may suspect another kind of infection like yeast infection for example.

In some cases however, there can be some itching or burning around the vaginal area but not inside.

Alternate Diagnoses – What if it weren’t BV?

There are several conditions that have like symptoms as that of BV.

1. Candidiasis or Yeast Infection

Bacteria and yeast are both present in a normal and healthy vagina. Antibiotics kill bacteria but yeast cells remain unaffected. Here are some yeast infection symptoms

-white vaginal discharge

-swelling as well as pain in the vulva region

-extreme itching

-painful coitus

Antifungal medication is used to treat yeast infections. Antibiotics only worsen yeast infection so you need to know which one you have.

2. Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is an STD or sexually transmitted disease which is a result of a microscopic parasite that antibiotics can treat.  Trichomoniasis symptoms include:

-Watery, greenish or yellowish, foamy or frothy discharge

-foul smell that can be hard to distinguish from bacterial vaginosis odor

-vaginal itching

-Itching and pain when copulating or urinating

Other diagnoses may include infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, STDs or sexually transmitted disease that can lead to vaginal discharge.

Ultimately, it is essential to know bacterial vaginosis symptoms so that you can go for a checkup and get the proper treatment for your condition.
